The Great Debate

9/15/2010

Today we were discussing the concept of Necessities (needs) and wants.  We were also looking at what exactly "civilization" means.  An interesting debate started amongst a small group of students in my mods3-4 class.  These students were arguing whether education was a necessity or a want.  It was great!!  I took the debate to the entire class and we had students on both sides of the question.  Lots of great ideas were shared and I even left the room giving serious thought to were education stands concerning the survival of the individual.

Mr. Pennington is sick today, so my head is a little too cloudy to elaborate on how I feel about if education is a want or necessity.  Stay tuned for a comment from students and myself dicussing this interesting question.  Great job today students!!

Home work is nothing for tonight.

Great comments everyone...awesome to see you continuing this discussion!! Very proud of all of you...This is what learning should be. What would you guys think about having your own blogs. A place where you could talk about your day, how you feel about your education? Document what you learn and know? Reflect and collaborate with each other?

Hello Chardon,
I would like to see you have a blogs as well. All the kids at Beachwood will get blogs soon. Great discussion on Education. I will have to bring this up at BW and see how my students feel. Maybe we will have to set up a survey about this topic for all students at both schools. Keep thinking. Mr. H

I think education is a want but in some ways it can be a need. It can be a need if someone wants a good job. Its also a want because the government wants us to go to school so we can help humanity grow and stay alive

I'm for you all having blogs as well. We're talking about that in computers class as well.

Mr. P- what about some kind of combined format? Tech/social studies? Hmm...

Mr. P and Mr. H- Feel free to take a look at our discussions at http://cmscomputers700.weebly.com/

I am impressed with the thought going on! What if you don't have any siblings to teach you anything? I like how people realize that education is more than learning to read and do math.

This debate is very impressive. This seems like a very hot topic. How would our community and society function if we did not have educated citizens? How would uneducated citizens help with the advancement of our society? Could they?

in my opinion i still think that education is a nessesity. only because without it you would probably have a hard time stayign alive because you probably wouldnt have a job, you couldnt read, you would understand what some things people are saying, ect.

Not everything fits into a pretty little box. *except for chocolate...that absolutely does.

If we compare the process of education to other instincts...such an infant eating, then the natural process makes it a necessity. Loved listening to the students start to question their own thoughts. Never stop!
