Over the last few weeks we have been learning the story about Prehistorical times.  Our main focus were: trends, tools, development of society, culture, and human migration.

Students again, created essential questions to focus learning on past.  I was impressed with these questions and thoughts.  They are asking very good questions and I assume this will continue.

We took a quiz that some students did not score highly on.  The following day, I had them do the following:  1.  List everything they knew about the period we were working on,   2.  explain if they felt they had learned a good the last two weeks, 3.  did they have pride in their work, 4.  how they felt about the quiz, 5. what was the purpose of quizzes or tests.

We had a good discussion about these questions.  In fact, only three children were not proud of all they had learned and what they wrote showed that.  I explained the contradiction in education: the big picture (understanding) vs. the details (state testing).  We talked about individual value vs. test/quiz scores.  Then we took another look at the quiz and corrected it.  Many missed questions, not because they don't know the content, but because they did not read carefully or they understand the question. Everyone left class with a better understanding of how to answer test questions.   I think we all learned a valuable lesson today.

Most days I plan to have student's do this blog.  Here is our first attempt.  Thank you Anielle.

Yesterday, September 1, 2010, in class, we learned about open and closed questions. We learned what they were and what kind of questions were considered to be open or closed.
Today, September 2, 2010, in class, we did an activity in partners to help us better understand what Essential Questions are. The activity was to look at a statement about Essential Questions and try to gather any information that could help us better define Essential Questions.

The Homework for September 2, 2010:
-Write 5 Essential Questions on a notecard
-Bring in a picture of yourself for "Mr. Holman's Wall of Fame" (it can have other people in it)
-Bring in old magazines for an activity

Are you a Psychologist?

Today we were covering the rules and procedures for the course.  We will be finishing up procedures tomorrow.   However, in third period, I was asked are you a psychologist?   The student went on to say I was asking questions that made her think about her mind and "big" questions.  I explained to them all, I was just explaining why I spend so much time on how the class works and justified why these ideas are important.  They discussed a Harry Wong quote and we talked about effective classroom management.

We talked about some ways to focus during class when you are getting bored: bouncing the leg, and other techniques that do not infer with learning.  They seemed to enjoy the new ideas and ways to help them stay focused.   As class finished I asked them to write a few lines about what rules they will have trouble following: first being organized, second being perpared, and third listening (not hearing).  We will work on these during the year...new techniques and ways to achieve these skills.

We should finish the rules and procedures up by the end of the day Tuesday and begin a look at Culture that will lead us into editorial cartooning.   Many students have  really enjoy the cartoon mini unit in the past--BUT they have to keep an eye on current events.  Start those discussions at home.    Have a good night.
