This is a software I found on Twitter that is free and we might be able to use it on your own personal blogs. It allows you to make simple surveys without setting up an account or providing a name. Then you copy the code and paste it into the custom HTML box. We will see how it works. Yesterday, the seventh grade staff had a recognition assembly for the first marking period. Students who earn honor, high honor and merit roll were called up on the stage for recognition. Students who were selected as student of the week were also brought up on stage. Images are below. As a staff, we are very proud of the effort of these students.
For the last two weeks, I have helped Mrs. Goodman's reading class connect with Mrs. Holman's (my wife) Kindergarten class for reading time via Skype. Beachwood students review the site words, letters of the week and read a story that deals with the weeks theme.
I took a few pictures, however, they are not that good. But you can see the idea of how it is working. We are looking at possible ways to set up a math tutoring session and more. 21st Century skills in actions. Monday: textbook reading on direct democracy and Athens. State Standards on Government. Tuesday: compare direct and representative and participation in a monarchy, direct, representative. Wednesday: Small groups and google docs. Creating a master key Thursday: Veterans Day and participation in a representative democracy Friday: Blog on Government. This required: 1. Title, 2. State Standards spelled out, 3. What you learned, 4. Embed your class google doc. (one class example below) Students were also given extend work, if they moved quickly in these tasks. Some time will be given on Monday to complete the blog. This week we have started to talk about government forms. From the first week of school, we have discussed the reasons for laws and government. They understand that. Now, as our standards states, we will discuss the ideas and define what is a Direct Democracy, Representative Democracy or the Republic, and Monarchy systems of government. Then students will need to understand the rights and responsibility of "citizens" in these systems of government. Please speak with your student about these ideas and share your opinions on systems of government. Below is a reading of the Deceleration of Independence A very interesting and telling video clip that was shown to the Beachwood staff on our PD day Nov. 2. I have read, viewed and heard Sir Ken Robinson many times. He is an expert on Creativity--see his link. I think his ideas about education in this film are worth hearing. Let me know what you think? How do you draw like that? Today, students who had turned in a permission slip (handed out on 10/25--extra copies provided each day) began to create their own websites much like this one. However, as the permission slip stated, these are password protected. Please get the password from your child and visit their site on and off to see the work they are doing.
Already, five or six kids have uploaded their "What was seventh grade like?" movie, youtube clips on Digital Footprints or Did you Know. I was impressed--and very tired-- by the word they achieved in 32 minutes. I hope the blogs engage and help students see the interconnectedness of the work they are doing.
