Mr. Pennington's Field Trip to BMS

12/21/2011

Since we (in Chardon) are on Winter break, I decided to spend the day at Beachwood.  As part of my duties I was nice enough to teach Mr. Holman's classes for him.  We (Well really I) introduced the Middle Ages Webquest and helped the students pick their social classes.  I had an awesome time and it was pretty cool to see the students at BMS in person instead of through a Skype conversation.  I was also humbled that some of the 8th graders remembered my face and stopped by to say hello.

Mr. Holman will be visiting the Chardon students the first week we come back from break.

Yesterday's daily assignment is copied and pasted below. As I asked students to share their ideas and  thinking.  This answer from third period was outstanding.  Great Work and more importantly, great thinking.  WAY TO SEE CONNECTIONS.  I asked her to send me a copied version, not just a screenshot and will add it later.

HER ANSWER: Now pick two of the reasons above and explain how they impacted society and led to Rome's fall. Unemployment- was a huge problem in their society like it is in ours today, when citizens are unemployed they feel upset or down about themselves. They begin to blame the government for their unemployment. Another negative effect of being unemployed is not being able to support yourself and your family, citizens began to steal from others of what they weren't able to afford this led to higher crime rates in the empire.Inflation- was another problem that we have today and also what they had in the empire. This meant that prices of goods increased while jobs open for citizens decreased. Also gold wasn't used as much because it was too expensive, also coins became less valuable.

Dec. 14, 2011: Cause One Of the Middle Ages, Fall of Rome
1.  Take a few minutes and list as many facts as we can about Rome at it's highest point?
2.  See this map of the Roman Empire: http://www.worldology.com/Europe/images/rise_rome.jpg   What does this tell us?  What is another name for the Germanic Tribes to the Northeast?3.  Find out five reasons for the Fall of Rome: Use your own sites in Diigo or this one saved by Jamie: http://www.rome.info/history/empire/fall/
4.  Now pick two of the reasons above and explain how they impacted society and led to Rome's Fall.
 5.  See image projected on front board. What are five details you see.  What does it show us or explain what is happening here.
6. The Roman Empire had been in place over 800 years, what do you think will happen in Europe now that Rome has been destroyed?

Today we started setting up student's webpages.  These pages are confidential (not open for public viewing).  Monday I will send home more detailed information as to how we will use these websites and give parents the option to opt out if they so desire.  Students are allowed to personalize their websites, school appropriate and always keeping in mind that we want to "leave digital footprints worth following".  Students have been warned that there are no second chances, inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated.  You may see your son/daughter working on their site over the weekend.  Monday I will give the students more guidance as to how to format, use and enjoy their ability to publish their knowledge.  Have a great weekend everyone!!!

The website to visit in order to edit your website is http://students.weebly.com
